Pharmacy in Spain Information
A pharmacy in Spain is called a farmacia.
Opening Times:
- They are usually from 9.30am in the morning until 2.00pm in the afternoon.
- Then from 5.00pm until 9.30pm Monday to Friday from 9.00am – 2.00pm on Saturday.
A 24 hour pharmacy is always open and the rota is normally displayed in the pharmacy windows.

Pharmacy in Spain ~ Prescriptions and Charges
Many drugs requiring a prescription in the UK are available over the counter in Spain and are often much cheaper than in the UK.
If you go to the doctor in Spain you must present your EHIC and ask for state-funded healthcare.
- You will pay 50% of the cost or approximately 10% with proof if you are a UK pensioner.
- If you don’t have an EHIC card you are liable to pay all the costs.
- UK pensioners can often reclaim the cost from the UK’s Department for Work and Pensions.
- Those with private medical insurance may qualify for refund depending on the insurance.
Spanish Pharmacists
Many are able to offer advice in English and all are registered with the local pharmaceutical association which is part of the Consejo General de Colegios Oficiales de Farmaceuticos.
