Peniscola ~ Costa Azahar in Valencia
This very pretty fortress town on the Costa Azahar is famous for the Papa Luna Castle which was used as the backdrop to the 1960s film El Cid.
The castle was built by the Knights Templar on the ruins of a Moorish fortress and another interesting story is that Pope Benedict X111 who had been dismissed from his position founded an asylum here in the 13th century.
During the summer the town hosts events such as the popular International Festival of Cinema Comedy and the International Festival of Ancient and Baroque Music.
A traditional event in Spain is the Moros y Cristianos – (Moors and Christians) which is held
every year against the backdrop of the impressive Papa Luna castle which is also used for summer exhibitions and activities.
The north of the town has sandy and rocky beaches and a pretty marina with a variety of cafès, restaurants and shops.
Beaches
The south coast of town is full of lovely tiny coves which are perfect for scuba diving and fishing and the area is surrounded by the magnificent Sierra d’Irta mountain range.
Parallel to the new town and to the north of the town are 5km of lovely sandy beaches.
This is one of the most beautiful towns in Castellon Valencia and well worth visiting.
