La Lonja de la Seda (Silk Exchange/Market) Valencia
La Lonja was built from1482 to 1498 and in 1996 was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Built in the style of a fortress the building towers over the Old Town with the Valencian flag flying on top and is opposite Mercado Central in Plaza del Mercado.
During the 15th century Valencia was an economic power and this is where merchants met to conduct their business.
This stunning building has a beautiful interior and pretty little garden with orange trees and a fountain.
The door of this magnificent building is situated in the center of the main facade on the Plaza del Mercado. The complex includes the main Contract Hall ( Sala de Contratación), the Pavillion of the Consulate which was the seat of the Tribunal del Mar (merchant tribunal) and the central tower.
The main Sala de Contratación and tower were inspired by the Lonja de Palma de Mallorca which was built in 1426-48.
The Chapel (dedicated to the Conception of the Virgin) is on the ground floor with access from the Sala de Contratación.
The Consulado building rises to three storeys and is now the seat of the Cultural Academy of Valencia. It serves as the venue for many exhibitions and other cultural activities.
