TRAVELER’S TALES SPAIN
I loved reading Travelers’ Tales Spain: True Stories (Travelers’ Tales Guides) edited by Lucy MacCauley. The book contains true stories of authors such as Gabriel García Marquez and Penelope Casas on their travels through Spain.
As well as being a very enjoyable read, this book must definitely be included in my list of ‘books on Valencia Spain’.
For those visiting Valencia during the last Wednesday in August be sure to read the vivid account by Louis de Bernières of La Tomatina (battle of tomatoes), which is aptly named ‘Seeing Red’.
DUENDE
As a passionate lover of Spain, and after living in Madrid for some years, it’s hardly surprising that after reading Duende: A Journey Into the Heart of Flamenco, I should head straight for Valencia. The book begins just outside Elche which is near Alicante in the region of Valencia.
It’s an account of a young man’s search for ‘duende’ (meaning spirit/soul). His search spreads to Andalucia and Madrid and his subsequent encounters and experiences offer a vivid insight into the Flamenco underworld.
