Discover Traditional Spanish Food

Traditional Spanish food includes paella and tapas which is eaten all over the world.

mercadocentralfruitstallSpain is a Mediterranean country and enjoys an abundance of fruit, vegetables, herbs and fresh fish which form the basis of the Mediterranean diet.

Olives are a major source of income for most Mediterranean countries and olive oil is one of the most important ingredients in Spanish food.

Bread spread with oil, garlic and tomatoes is a very popular snack all over Spain  –  pan con tamate in Spanish means bread with tomatoes  (in Catalan it’s pa amb tomaquet).

Spain has the most amazing array of fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs such as parsley, garlic and the famous saffron which is very expensive so many use pimiento instead.

Spain was occupied by the Moors for many years so the food of Spain also uses the various spices and herbs related to this type of cooking.

In most rural areas markets are overflowing with the freshest of vegetables and fruit and in cities such as Valencia, Madrid and Barcelona there are large covered markets

Breakfast (El Desayuno)

This is not usually a heavy meal and consists of toast, croissants, cakes and fresh coffee. Chocolate drink (hot or cold) is very popular for children and adults in Spain.  Everyone enjoys magdalena cakes for breakfast and merrienda (afternoon snack/tea).

Spain is famous for the huge variety of cheeses they have and a slice of Manchego cheese, with some crunchy bread and a few olives,  makes an excellent breakfast and a tasty meal.

 Traditional Spanish Food

Lunch – La Comida

paellavalencianaThe Spanish are well know for their afternoon siesta and many still enjoy a large lunch followed by an afternoon nap.

The meal normally begins with soup and bread followed by a meat or fish dish with plenty of fresh salad.

On Sundays the family usually eat together and paella is a often eaten for lunch,  never for dinner.

  • Spanish desserts normally consist of a variety of fruits or the quintessential flan (creme caramel).
  • Many shops and offices in cities have stopped having a break for siesta so people take their lunch break at one of the local tapas bars.

During the hot summer months the best way to cool down and satisfy your appetite is with a bowl of gazpacho soup which is healthy and nutritious.

Traditional Spanish Food

Tortilla (Spanish Omelet), Tapas & Paella

tortilla traditional spanish foodTapas and paella, Spanish omelet or bocadillas (crusty bread filled with cheese, serrano ham and other tasty fillings) are on the menu.

Easter in Spain

Easter Traditions In Spain …

During Easter in Spain you will be amazed  at the stunning processions with floats depicting the Passion.  Statues of Jesús and the Virgin Mary and floats carried by men wearing hoods and long robes.

Easter Processions in Spain These are followed by penitents dressed in pointed hoods and capes and some are barefoot, wearing chains.

This represents the suffering of Christ. The procession begins on the first day of Semana Santa (Holy Week) el Domingo de Ramos (Palm Sunday).

Procesión del Silencio – (The Procession of Silence) is held on Jueves Santo – (Holy Thursday)

Santo Entierro – (Holy Burial) is held on Viernes Santo – (Holy Friday).

Easter  in Spain

On Easter Day (El Domingo de Resurrección) everyone goes to church and celebrates the resurrection of Christ.

Throughout Easter tasty torrijas are eaten. They are very easy to make and consist of slices of bread, soaked in a mixture of whisked eggs and milk (similar to French toast) and then fried in olive oil and sprinkled with sugar – very yummy!

spanisheastercake-300x199Pastelerías (cake shops) and panaderias (breadshops) all over Spain are full of them and on Easter day there is the traditional Easter cake, ‘la mona de Pascua’  which originates from the 15th century.

Once  a small round pastry/cake topped with hard boiled eggs the cakes are now more elaborate. The word ‘mona’ also means a gift so as well as having an Easter cake most children also receive ‘a gift’ from their Godparents on Easter Sunday.

Top Things To Do In Valencia

Top things to do in Valencia include visiting the Turia Gardens.  The park stretches the length of Valencia like a lovely green ribbon.

Top Things To Do In Valencia ~ Turia GardensIf you don’t feel like walking, you can hire a bike.

agoracityofartsandsciencesvalenciaVisit the amazing City of Arts and Sciences at the end of the  gardens.   It’s one of the top tourist attractions in Valencia.  The gardens separate the Old Quarter from the new city. There are nineteen bridges crossing the Turia Gardens,  most with steps leading down into the gardens.

torresdeserranosThe Torres de Serranos is one of the old gateways leading to Barrio del Carmen in the old part of town (the other is Torres de Quart).

To reach the beach from the old quarter, take the bus from Plaza del Ayuntamiento or cross over the Puente de Serranos (Serranos Bridge) and walk to the metro stop at Pont de Fusta. From here take the overground tram to Las Arenas beach (takes about 15 minutes).

Designed by local architect Santiago Calatrava – hence the name of the bridge.

During the hot summer months a walk through the Turia Gardens is very enjoyable and it’s also one of the best ways to reach the City of Arts and Sciences.

Puente del Mar Valencia

The disastrous floods in the city of Valencia in 1957 resulted in the Turia river being diverted south of the city.

During the 1990s the entire area was regenerated and transformed into a 7 kilometer promenade of flowers, parks, ponds, fountains and sports facilities.

University Area ~ Avenida Blasco Ibáñez

Avenida Blasco Ibáñez is named after the novelist Vicente Blasco Ibáñez and stretches from  the Exposicion neighborhood to the old maritime fishing district of Cabanyal.

As well as being the longest street in Valencia, this is also where the city universities are located and where you will find many blocks of apartments, pubs and clubs.   If you enjoy listening to indie and rock music this area is a must to visit.

There were plans to extend the street to the beach (just like  Rambla in Barcelona)  but as this would entail demolishing lots of the old fishermans houses in Cabanyal, it has met with a lot of local opposition.
