Expo Hotel in Valencia

I stayed at the Expo quite recently – a large hotel situated on a busy main road.

Even though it’s a big hotel, it has a very friendly atmosphere – everyone says hello and they’re always happy to help. The rooms are clean, large and airy and it’s great value for money (be sure to get breakfast included in the price when you book!).

• It was very peaceful for such a large hotel due to the soundproofing and I was never disturbed during the entire stay. This is also surprising considering the hotel is situated in a vibrant, busy area.

• That’s another great thing – the hotel is practically connected to a massive department store with supermarket – El Corte Ingles (a long-established chain). There are also lots of places to eat and shop nearby.

• The old town is just a 10 minute walk away and you can visit the trendy Barrio del Carmen (full of bars and clubs) and all the old squares (plazas) – and see all the historical landmarks that make Valencia so special.

• There is a metro station and lots of buses available right outside the hotel. The staff were happy to help with directions and had plenty of tourist information. Other places of interest are Colon (a great shopping area) which is a bus ride away (or you can walk to it via el Carmen).

• Go a little further on the bus and you come to Cabanyal where you’ll find a lovely long sandy beach full of cafes and restaurants.

This is a great hotel and I had a relaxed, enjoyable stay. I’ll definitely be back soon! By the way, there’s a fantastic swimming pool on the roof of the hotel with fantastic views of Valencia!

Loved the Venecia!

On my last visit to Valencia I stayed at the Venecia Hotel in Plaza del Ayuntamiento. This is a fantastic 2* hotel which really should be a 3*.

• It was very cheap and has breakfast included which consists of a buffet selection of continental and english breakfast which really sets you up for the day. The breakfast room overlooks the Plaza del Ayuntamiento which enables you to watch the hustle and bustle of the city.

• The rooms were clean, modern and a good size with comfortable beds and air conditioning.  We also had a tv and balcony.

• The bathroom had everything you could wish for being fully tiled with a large bath and powerful shower also a hairdryer.

• The room had fitted wardrobes which also had a safe where you could store your personal belongings.

• All the staff were friendly, helpful and spoke English which helped when we asked for information on were to go.

• The reception, though small was welcoming and has a lounge where you can relax or meet people and a drinks machine with hot and cold drinks. There is also internet access available in the reception area.

Probably one of the best points of the hotel is the location as it’s right in the middle of Plaza del Ayuntamiento. It’s the most central place being only a short walk to all the places of interest ie the market, all the shops on Colon and restaurants and only 10 mins from Barrio del Carmen.

I highly recommend this hotel and will definitely stay there again when I visit Valencia.

Menorca, Balearic Islands Spain

The pretty island of Menorca lies off the coast of Valencia and is  just a ferry ride away.

The smallest of the three main Balearic Islands it’s easy to reach from the Port of Valencia or Denia in the Valencia Region of Spain.

There are many beautiful villas with private swimming pools, lovely hotels and apartments. We stayed for a couple of weeks in the villa above which was located on a slope – only  a 10 minute walk down to the beach and 15mins back! Amazing views and swimming pool.

Sandy beaches line the southern shore and pretty little fishing villages are to be found on the rockier northern coastline.

The island is very rural and agriculture is of great importance as are the popular cheeses, shoe and gin production. The famous gin is made from juniper berries and special grapes. You can get to know more about these on one of the popular tours.

As well as being famous for its shoe making, gin and cheese, the island is also credited for inventing mayonnaise.

The two main towns  are Maó (Mahón in Castilian Spanish) which is the capital of Menorca and Cuitadella which was once the ancient capital of the island.

Maó – Mahon

Maó has a very busy port and in the harbour there’s a glass-bottom boat from which you can explore the sea-life of this beautiful island.

If you just want to relax take a walk to the harbour and wine and dine at one of the many little restaurants and bars that line the yacht filled harbour.

The Hotel San Miguel is in the heart of Mahón just 1 km from the Port of Mahón.

The hotel offers spacious rooms and a full and varied breakfast.

Cuitadella

At the opposite end of the island to Mahón is Cuitadella. This lovely old town,  once the capital of the island,  is overflowing with tiny narrow streets and old majestic buildings. There are many excellent restaurants around the harbour.

The Cheap and Chic hotel is in the center of Cuitadella just 450 meters from the Port and 100 meters from the cathedral in the old town.

Rooms are modern, air-conditioned and each features the work of a different local artist plus free Wi-Fi.

Son Bou Menorca

The resort of Son Bou is a 20 minute drive from the airport and has a very long beach, in fact the longest on the island.  The golden sand and the shimmering blue water are perfect for sunbathing, swimming – windsurfing – motorboats – pedaloes and water-skiing.

The hotel Sol Milanos Pingüinos is situated on Son Bou Beach and features a large lagoon-style pool, rooms with balconies and 2 buffet restaurants. There is also a café and self-service snack bar, which has a poolside terrace and entertainment.

This is a very family-friendly resort full of  villas and apartments. There is an excellent bus service so it’s easy to get around the island. The nearby market town of Alaior is famous for its cheese making and has lots of cafes and shops so well worth a visit.

Cala’en Porter

The resort of Cala’en Porter  is one of the oldest resorts on the island with a beautiful beach and just a 15 – 20 minute drive from Mahon airport. There is a village with a selection of shops and restaurants with more down by the beach.

The Hotel Sa Barrera is a small hotel located in the center of Cala en Porter just 200 meters from the beach and features an outdoor swimming pool, air-conditioned rooms with balcony and a restaurant with terrace overlooking the small bay.

Fornells

On the northern coast of the island is the resort of Fornells which has a more rugged coastline with many tiny coves and beaches. Fornells doesn’t have a beach but it is famous for sailing and has a lovely selection of restaurants.

The airport is located very close to Maó (Mahon) and as the island is so small, traveling is not a problem.

Valencia Province ~ Region of Valencia

The Valencia region of  Spain is divided into three provinces.  Castellon in the north, Valencia province in the center and Alicante province in the south.  The city of Valencia is the capital of Valencia province.

Valencia Province

In this area of Spain the land is very fertile and Valencia has a booming agricultural business which includes the export of Valencia oranges.

This area is known as la Huerta Valencia (the garden of Valencia)and produce is delivered to local markets including  Mercado Central in the town center. The shops,  restaurants, Valencianos and tourists often get their supply from here.

Valencia is also the birth-place of paella,  the traditional dish of Spain. Only 12kms from the center of Valencia is the beautiful nature reserve and freshwater lagoon of l’Albufera which is separated from the sea by a thin strip of land.

This area is full of pine forests and sand dunes and where Valencia (bomba) rice is grown which is used for Paella Valenciana.

This is where you can taste original authentic Valencian food.  Traditional Spanish food includes tapas and there are many of these tasty little dishes in the tapas bars of Valencia.

North of the City of Valencia

There are many lovely coastal towns such as Monte Picayo with the 5 star hotel Gran Casino Monte Picayo in the resort town of Puçol just 12km from the city.

The town of Alboraya is famous for the popular Valencian drink of Horchata which is traditionally served with fartons (long iced buns).

• If you like sailing then you’ll love Port Saplaya.

• You can moor your boat very close to your front door and the lovely port at Carraxet ravine has the Chapel of the Little Fish – (Peixets).

Nearby is the town of La Pobla de Farnals where you’ll find a lovely marina full of yachts.

A little further on (about 30km north of Valencia) is the ancient Roman city of Sagunt.

The lovely towns of Requena and Utiel are located inland and famous for their wine production .

Both towns are within easy reach of the city of Valencia with Requena being the nearest at only 65km and Utiel a little further at 73km.

There are Vineyard Tours where you can visit a bodega and doing a little wine tasting.

Festival of Sant Joan

The festival of Sant Joan (San Juan in Castillian), is a pagan festival which is celebrated all over Spain. The festival coincides with the summer solstice and to celebrate the longest night of the year huge bonfires are lit on the beach.

It is customary to have lots of food and drinks and there’s much singing and dancing and jumping over bonfires on the lovely beach.

Whilst you’re her why not jump on a train and visit Barcelona or take a ferry to the Balearic Islands.

You´ve also got the high speed AVE train connecting Valencia to Madrid.

The flower filled festivals reach their peek with the Feria de Julio (July Fair).  What better way to celebrate the hot summer days and warm summer nights than with classical and rock concerts,  theatrical events and sports and firework displays on the beach.

Feria de Julio

The July Fair lasts for practically the entire month of July and there are lots of things to see and do during the month.

There will be a total of 132 acts  in 30 locations in the city from 1 – 28 July with many open air concerts in the Viveros Gardens which we have included and also a program of events.

Filmoteca de Verano / Turia Gardens / July and August

IVAC-La Filmoteca opens its doors to Valencia festival of films during the summer months in the Turia Gardens (Jardines del Turia) close to the lovely Palau de la Musica.

This celebration of films at reasonable prices makes this one of the best events of the year.
Tickets are around 3.5 € for one session and 10 sessions cost €22.

You can enjoy some excellent films (including some in English) along with popcorn, coke and beer.
