Valencia Flowers ~ Land of flowers, light and love!

Valencia Flowers are an essential part of festivals and everyday life in the lovely city of Valencia.

For example, festivals such as Las Fallas, Cruces de Mayo the July Fair and Dia de la Virgin de los Desamparados wouldn’t be complete without them.

The entire region of Valencia is very fertile so no wonder it’s known as the ‘land of flowers, light and love’.

All across the city in parks and gardens of Valencia such as the Turia Gardens (Jardins del Turia) the scent of flowers is heavy in the air.

In Plaza del Ayuntamient , in the center of the old town are rows of flower shops selling flowers for all occassions.

Festival of Las Fallas

Valencia is famous for its exciting festivals which often include an abundance of flowers and pyrotechnic events.

Las Fallas is one of the largest festivals in Spain and the ‘Ofrenda de Flores’ is an important part of the event which takes place in Plaza de la Virgin in the old town.

Thousands of Valencian women and girls called fallera/falleros wearing traditional dresses.

They carry bouquets of red and white carnations and roses to Nuestra Senora de los Desamparados (Patron Saint of Valencia).

Then everyone weaves the flowers into a beautiful mantel to cover the Virgin.

Cruces de Mayo

Flowers are used to decorate crosses which line the streets of Valencia during the festival of Cruces de Mayo (Crosses of May) on the 3 May.

Dia de la Virgin de los Desamparados

Then on the second Sunday in May it’s the annual festival of the Virgin de los Desamparados.

In a flower filled procession the virgin is carried from the Basilica in Plaza de la Virgin to the nearby Cathedral of Valencia and ends with the square covered in a blanket of flowers.

Feria de Julio – July Fair

The Valencia July Fair originated from a flower and produce festival in 1871. This annual festival overflows with flower filled floats along the Paseo de la Alameda and culminates with the traditional Battle of Flowers.

Shopping in Valencia Spain 

Explore the variety of Valencia markets this lovely city is famous for.

Feast your eyes on the delicious array of fruit and veg, the famous flowers and culinary delights at  Mercardo Central.

If you’re around this area on a Sunday morning don’t forget to visit Plaza Redonda. It’s a very unusual market locally know as ‘el clot’ (‘the hole’).

There’s a circular fountain in the middle of Plaza Redonda and the market is full of shops selling ceramics, linen, haberdashery and so on.

There’s also an entrance to the Plaza Redonda from Calle San Vicente Martir (near the Iglesia de San Martín).

Although it’s open most days, the best time to visit is on a Sunday morning.
There are a few tapas bars inside and many places to eat in the surrounding area.

MERCADO CENTRAL

Plaça del Mercat/Plaza del Mercado

A  must to visit! This is one of the most beautiful buildings in Valencia and a masterpiece of modernist architecture.

Incredibly large (possibly the largest in Europe) and very grand. Covered with ceramics and glass and topped with a parrot.

With over a 1,000 stalls stacked with anything from whole legs of ham to the freshes seafoods, fish, poultry, cheeses, vegetables and fruit you are spoilt for choice. Outside are stalls full of the lovely flowers of Valencia.

CABANYAL MARKET

Every Thursday a very good street market selling clothes, bric a brac and many other things such as fruit and veg is held by the beach in Cabanyal.

Nearby is another excellent mini version of the central market and not far away is a large Mercadona supermarket with a wide selection of food.

Valencia Aquarium : L’Oceanografic in the City of Arts and Sciences

Valencia Aquarium is housed in L’Oceanografic which is the largest marine park in Europe and the largest aquarium in Europe.

This stunning building was designed by Felix Candela and is reminiscent of the amazing work of Barcelona’s Antoni Gaudí.

Valencia Aquarium at the Oceanografic can be found in the stunning City of Arts and Sciences (Ciutat de les Arts i de les Ciencies).

The oceans and species of the sea are well represented in this truly spectacular area in the center of Valencia.  The complex also contains a planetarium, science museum, botanical garden and opera house.

L’Oceanographico

As you can see from the photo above, L’Oceanographico is situated mainly under ground. Next to the building is a mesh globe which houses the Wetlands where you’ll find marshland and mangrove swamps.

Mediterranean

This area contains the largest aquarium in Europe with around 7,400 specimens. There are seven aquariums which recreate the natural environments of species associated with the Mediterranean seas such as eels, sea cucumbers and scorpion fish. You can get up very close to see these exciting and lovely fish.

ARCA del Mar

This is a research center which focuses on the reproduction of species facing extinction. It has a surface of 210 m2 and a 110 volume of m3 and contains the latest technology to treat turtles and dolphins.

The Artic building is designed to look like an igloo. This is where marine biologists monitor the behavior of whales and walruses. In the Ocean building you can watch a colony of penguins laze on rocks and then take a swim.

Dolphinarium

This is the largest in Europe and contains 23 million liters of water. It has a seating capacity for 2,210 people and as well as being of great entertainment it’s also very educational.

The bottle-nose dolphins are amongst the most common type of dolphin and measure almost 4 meters in length. There is a very famous bottle-nose dolphin called Flipper who starred in the movie and television series of the same name.

Valencia Opera House ~ Palau de les Arts, Reina Sofia

Valencia Opera House is known as Palau de les Arts and was officially opened on 9 October 2005,  the National Day of Valencia.

Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia sparkles in the sunlight and is shaped like the helmet of an ancient goddess.  The building is the last piece of the jigsaw  of Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava’s amazing City of Arts and Sciences complex which is located at the end of the Turia Gardens in the center of Valencia.

Considered to be the largest opera house in Europe, Valencia Opera House is also a cultural center.

With a seating capacity of 4,400, only Sydney Opera House in Australia surpases it with a larger seating capacity.

The cost of building this beautiful theatre was 250 million euros and consists of four halls and measures 40,000 m. It contains the most modern technology and open-air auditoriums for  opera performances, dance performances, concerts and recitals.

The master room can accommodate 378 people and  is specially designed for chamber concerts, recitals, lectures and educational meetings.

Valencia Festival of Films / Summer Open Air Cinema in the Park

IVAC-La Filmoteca opens its doors to Valencia festival of films during the summer months in the Palau Gardens where a different film will be shown at 10:30 pm every night for just €3.50, until the 31 August.

Another French supermarket chain with branches all over Spain and one of the largest is  in the El Saler shopping center near the City of Arts and Sciences.

This is a Hypermarket so you’re sure to find what you’re looking for here. It’s also very handy if you’re staying near the area.

Where to go shopping in Valencia …

You really can shop till you drop in Valencia. There are so many top international Spanish stores such as Mango and Zara right on your doorstep and things are so much cheaper.

The center of Valencia is a shoppers paradise with an array of popular local shops.

The Old Quarter of Valencia is a treasure trove of little shops tucked away in cobbled side streets.

There are many Bijou Brigitte shops selling affordable jewellery (earrings, necklaces, bracelets) and accessories (belts, gemstones) .

Shopping in Valencia  at  Lladro Boutique

Collectors of the beautiful Lladro porcelain figures are in for a treat,  as this is the home of LLadro.

With such an assortment of shops, ranging from inexpensive boutiques to designer stores, there’s a lot to choose from.

The upmarket tree-lined Calle Colón is very trendy and one of the major boulevards in Valencia.

If you’re hunting for the latest fashion, you will definitely find it here.

There are many little souvenir shops in Valencia, especially around Le Seu (Cathedral district – Cathedral of Valencia) where you can buy typical souvenirs.  There are also many shops selling the famous Agua de Valencia and local wines and food of this area of Spain (see Districts of Valencia and food of Valencia).

Shopping in Valencia wouldn’t be complete without a visit to one of the many markets.

There are quite a few in Valencia, but the most famous and beautiful of them all is Mercat Central, which sells fresh produce.

There’s also a very good street market every Thursday by the beach in the district of Cabanyal selling clothes, bric-à-brac and many other things such as fruit and veg.

There are three stores in C/Colón and they usually have a cafe/restaurant on the top floor and a supermarket in the basement

LLadro Boutique Shop in Valencia and Museum in Tavernes Blanques

The Valencian brothers who created these beautiful porcelain figurines are famous throughout the world.

Not far from Plaza de la Ayuntamiento, in the lovely Calle Poeta Querol, is the LLadro boutique shop.

This is where you can purchase many of the famous figurines which make wonderful gifts.

The  LLadro workshops at Tavernes Blanques are just a short drive from center of Valencia.

You can arrange a free guided visit which is conducted in Spanish, English, French, Italian, Dutch, Russian and Bulgarian.  The factory retail outlet sells slightly damaged pieces at lower prices.

The factory is 5km (3 miles) north of the city center. To arrange a tour of the Lladro factory Tel:  +34 96 318 70 00 at least a month in advance.

The Lladro Brothers

The brothers, Juan, José and Vicente were born into a farming family but instead of carrying on with the tradition of farming, they chose to follow their artistic dreams.

Both attended the Valencia School of Arts and Crafts and created the Lladró brand in their tiny workshop in their village of Almàssera  in the Valencia province.  Their first retail shop opened in Valencia in 1955 and a few years later the factory moved to the town of Tabernas.

The workshop grew so large that it’s now known as the City of Porcelain.

Getting Here

 By Bus: Take the number 16 bus from the center of Valencia.

By Metro:  Take line 3 from Xativa station in the center of town to Alboraya Palmaret Station (10 minute walk from Lladro) .
