El Gordo The Fat One

EL GORDO – Loteria de Navidad

El Gordo ~ Spanish Christmas Lottery

el-gordo

Every year the draw takes place on 22 December. This is the time when people all across Spain,  club their money together to buy a stake in this amazing draw.

History of El Gordo

Otherwise known as the ‘Fat One’ this famous national lottery game has been organized by the Spanish Goverment since 1812.  This Spanish tradition, which everyone enjoys, allows all to dream of becoming rich and living a life of leisure.  Entire towns and villages have prospered from the Fat One. For example, a few years ago the Catalan town of Vic (inland from Barcelona) were the winners and the town received €510m (£350m).

How El Gordo works

The Spanish Christmas Lottery is considered to be the biggest lottery in the world and nearly 100% of Spanish people have a portion of a lottery ticket and dream of becoming rich.

It is based on 5 winning numbers.  A lottery ticket (billete) costs €200 so tickets are sold as tenths (décimos) for 20 euros each. The Christmas Lottery draw follows the same procedure every year since it began in 1812.

Where is it held?

The lottery is held in the Madrid National Lottery Hall (Lotería Nacional hall of Madrid).  Boys and girls from San Ildefonso school take a ball from the bowl of numbers and another draws the corresponding prizes. The children then sing the results in front of a crowded hall and it’s all broadcast live on TV.

Watch it on TV!

As you can imagine everyone who isn’t in the hall is glued to their TVs to see if they are going to be the lucky winners.  The draw takes about three hours and the winners always give a donation to the San Ildefonso school.

Buena Suerte y Feliz Navidad!

Una Rosca de Reyes - Kings Day Cake
Kings Day In Valencia is on the 6 January

On this day children all over Spain receive their Christmas presents. Of course,  many children do receive a small present on Christmas Eve (Noche Buena),  but the main presents are given on el dia de Los Reyes – the day of the Kings.

Click here for Rosca de Reyes (kings day recipe)…

Kings Day In Valencia

christmas stockingEpiphany  (Twelfth Night) is when the Three Kings brought gifts of Frankinsense, Gold and Myrrh to the baby Jesus.

On the eve of this very special day (5 January),  parades of floats wind their way through the streets of Valencia. This happens all over Spain and the event is televised on TV.

Before going to bed on the 5 January children leave their shoes by the door with food and drink for the Kings.  In the morning they gleefully awake to find their presents from the Three Kings.

Parade for Kings Day in Valencia

The Kings and their entourage distribute vast amounts of sweets (candy)  to all the children who come prepared with bags to collect them.  This is a lovely festival with about 40 floats,  bands and musical groups which everyone enjoys along the route.

The three Kings come ashore in the Port of Valencia, usually at around 5.00pm. Then the cavalcade of the three Kings leave the port and head for the Paseo del Alameda,  near the Turia Gardens where the procession starts at 6.00pm.

The Kings travel through the streets of Valencia until they reach Plaza del Ayuntamiento where the cavalcade ends. From the town hall the Kings say a few words then move to the Salón de Cristal where the young children can chat with them.
