Cruz de Mayo ( Crosses of May )

On 3 May is the festival of ‘The Crosses of May’ when all the streets of Valencia are decorated with crosses made of flowers.

The Fiesta del Cristo del Grau

1 – 3 May

This year marks the 600th anniversary of the arrival of the Holy Christ of Grao to Valencia. The Fiesta del Cristo del Grau is a maritime event held along the waterfront in Valencia’s Grau district.

A statue of Christ is taken from Santa Maria del Mar Church and transported by boat and then along the streets.

On 1 May the brotherhood of the Holy Christ of Grau and the devotees of “Negret” will go to the port of Valencia to receive the image that will come from the sea. The 3 May is the main day of the festival.

At 19:30 the procession takes place through the streets of Avenida del Puerto – Sto. Cristo del Grau – Jose Aguirre – Architect Alfaro – Fco Cubells – JJ Domine – Avenida del Puerto – Parish.

Second Sunday in May

The beautiful festival of the Virgin de los Desamparados (Mare de Déu dels Desemparats) – Virgin of the Helpless and  Patron Saint of the City of Valencia is held annually on the second Sunday in May.

Once a year the virgin is carried in a procession of flower petals from the Basilica in Plaza de la Virgin to the Cathedral and at the end of the festival the entire square is a blanket of flowers.

The night before a concert is held in Plaça de la Verge/Plaza de la Virgin and then the celebrations move on to the Turia Gardens(old Turía riverbed), where there are firework displays and traditional singing and dancing.

  • 10.30am –  Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados makes her journey under a heavy shower of flower petals from the Basilica to the Cathedral (La Seu) .
  • 2.00pm there is a mascletá (fireworks)
  • 5.00pm the Virgin is again carried amid a blanket of flower petals through the Old Quarter of Valencia.

Albufera Valencia

The Albufera Valencia is a very beautiful nature reserve just 12km from the center of Valencia.

albuferavalencianationalparkAs well as being famous for the lovely freshwater lake and rice fields, it’s also the birthplace of the national dish of Spain.

This area of Spain is where the famous bomba rice is grown to make Paella Valenciana.

The main ingredients for this paella are seafood, chicken, rabbit and beans.

The further inland you travel and the paella is made by adding more chicken and rabbit and less seafood, beans and peppers. In season vegetables are also added.

There are many little fishing villages in the area and El Palmar village is full of excellent restaurants famous for the best paella in Valencia. This is also where you can also indulge in the traditional dish of baby eels, garlic and pepper.

The novel ‘Canas y barros’ (Reeds and Mud) by Valenciano author Vicente Blasco Ibàñez gives an excellent account of this lovely fishing area and how people used to live.  To find out more about novels by Vicente Blasco Ibàñez check out Valencia books.

Getting to Benidorm from Valencia …

The easiest way to get to Benidorm is by taking the bus from the central bus station in Valencia.  There are no trains from Valencia to Benidorm. If you must travel by train take the train from Estaciòn de Norte in the center of Valencia to Denia.

Alicante tramviaFrom there you take the narrow gauge tramvia which goes down the coast. If you take this route it takes a very long time and costs much more than taking the bus.
