Music of Valencia Spain

Music of Valencia Spain ~  Opera, Folk & Popular Rock

The music of Valencia reflects the culture and passion of this beautiful region of Spain. You’ll find all types of music ranging from classical to folk, jazz, reggae, popular and rock.

The Festival of Jazz in the Jardines del Palau de la Música in July in the Turia Gardens in Valencia plays host to the greats of jazz such as Natalie Cole, guitarist Ximo Tebar and many more.

July Fair – Feria de Julio

Palau de la Musica

Palau de la Musica Valencia

Paseo de la Almaeda, 30
Tel: 34 963 375 020

Opened in 1987 and considered one of the best concert halls in Europe.

An enormous glass dome covers the entrance and the cascading fountains rhythmically leap up and down into the pool outside.

For lovers of classical music this is a must. The program is only in Spanish but if you are a lover of music easy to understand.

Queen Sofia Palau de les Artes

Av Autopists del Saler, 5 Queen Sofia Palau de les Artes

The beautiful Palau de les Artes is the famous Valencia Opera House and part of the mind blowing City of Arts and Sciences.

With the most modern technology and open-air auditoriums for theater, opera and concerts, this is a major center of the performing arts in Valencia.

Benicassim International Festival

The music of Valencia Spain reflects not only the culture but also the pulsating energy of the youth of Spain.

This popular annual international rock festival is held in the costal town of Benicàssim in the region of Valencia.

The rock festival attracts some of the top names in rock and the four days of concerts and nine days of camping included in the 4-day pass, along with the weeks extra-musical activities, make for a great experience on the shores of the Mediterranean.

Benicàssim is easily reached from Estaciòn del Norte in Valencia. For information on trains check out train travel in Spain

Traditional Music of Valencia

The music of Valencia wouldn’t be complete without the popular dances and human towers of the Muixeranga which are found throughout Catalunya and Valencia.

Folk has its roots in soul and the music of Valencia reminds me a lot of the Greek ‘Rembetika’ which has evolved into the popular sound of Greece.

The traditional regional dances of ‘La jota’ and the ‘Fandango’ are very popular and there are many recordings of this music.

A collection of regional Spanish music on CD…

‘The Spanish Recordings: Aràgon and València’ by Roots – The Lomax Recordings.

These historic recordings were made by Alan Lomax whilst traveling through Spanish villages in 1952.

Valencia has it’s own national anthem and also a very famous song called Valencia.

Palma Mallorca

Palma Mallorca, Capital of the Island of MallorcaView of Palma Mallorca from the marina

Palma Mallorca is the capital of the island of Majorca and also the capital of the Balearic Islands. In March 2015, the Sunday Times said in their ‘Best Places to Live in the World’…

Our overall winner for 2015 is Palma de Mallorca, one of the most picturesque Spanish cities — we think it has it all’ – Helen Davis 22 March 2015.

Palma Mallorca from Valencia

balearicferry1-150x150The city of Palma is very easy to reach from the city of Valencia by ferry and also from Denia and Alicante, which are further down the coast in the region of Valencia.

Many tourists pass through Palma Airport on their way to other parts of the island never think about visiting the city, so never know what they’re missing.

There are narrow cobbled streets, tree-lined avenues, upmarket shops and an abundance of lovely restaurants, bars and clubs. Plus a huge marina and promenade lined with hotels, restaurants, bars and clubs, which make this a lovely place to visit.

Hotel Palacio Ca Sa GalesaA wide range of hotels and apartments and good local transport make it ideal if you stay in the old city of Palma. You can discover the rest of the island by bus or train.

Hire a car before you arrive and collect it at the airport or at the port of Palma Mallorca.

Palma Mallorca Cathedral

Palma Mallorca Catheral

Palma Mallorca Cathedral is a stunning 14th Century Gothic Cathedral (Le Seu) overlooking the waterfront and marina and a popular landmark on the island.

Palace of the Almudena

An equally stunning building is the Palace of the Almudena, which reflects the influence of Moorish architecture in this part of Spain.

The old city walls and Arab baths, together with the nearby palatial mansions, only add to the charm of this magical city. During the day, the town is buzzing with locals and tourist exploring the narrow streets of the historic quarter which is overflowing with trendy shops, patisseries, museums and bars.

We stayed in the center of town close to the Cathedral in a street near Placa Santa Eulalia full of cafes and bars.  Worth a visit is the nearby cafe Joan de Saigo at C’an Sanc which dates back to the 1700s.

If you’re renting an apartment, the nearby Olivar Market is very useful. Fresh fruit, veg, meat, poultry and fish on the lower floor and upstairs is a large Mercadona so you can stock up with drinks etc. Open from Monday to Saturday 7.00am – 2.00pm.

puertosollerBuses leave from the center of town to the nearby village of Deia, where the famous poet Robert Graves once lived. Visit the nearby town of Valldemossa where Chopin and George Sands stayed.

Take the train to the town of Soller and from there the tram to Puerto Soller. The views are stunning and the journey is amazing. The scent of citrus fruit hangs in the air. In fact, it’s so close, you can lean out and pick a lemon or two.

The promenade is a very popular place to go during the day or night. There are restaurants and bars with excellent views across the bay.

If you like diving, Cabo de San Antonio has excellent diving and there are many scuba diving shops offering indroductory courses and PADI courses.

The Parc Natural Montgo offers a variety of trails which hikers will enjoy. Just contact the local tourist office and they’ll give you a booklet of the Nature Parks and Trekking Routes.

All Spanish towns love fiestas and Jávea is no exception. As well as the ‘Moors and Christians’ fiesta  there’s the Fiesta of the ‘Virgen de Loreto’  (patron of the port of Duanes de la Mar).  The celebrations include processions with floats, firework displays and ‘Bous a la Mar’ – bull-running on the jetty.  Local boys jump into the sea and at the same time try to encourage a small bull to jump with them.

Due to the strict building regulations there are no high rise hotels and apartment blocks.
