Getting To Benicassim from Valencia

You can take a  cheap flight to Valencia then from the airport  take the metro line 3 or 5 to the metro stop Xativa close to Estacion del Norte (North Station) in the center of the city,  next to the Bullring.

Estacion del NorteFrom here you take the train to Benicassim. It takes about 45-50 mins and tickets cost approximately £16 return.

A cheaper alternative is to buy a return ticket for the “regional express” but it takes a little longer to get there.

Gazpacho Soup Recipe

Gazpacho Soup Recipe ~ Healthy, Cooling and Spicy!

http://www.dreamstime.com/stock-photos-gazpacho-soup-image27471503During the hot summer months in Spain it’s great to enjoy a bowl or glass of ice-cold gazpacho soup.

This classic chilled soup is very healthy as all the ingredients are raw.

It’s just like a spicy juice as it’s full  of so many vitamins. If you haven’t tried it yet then you’re in for a treat!

Originating from the region of Andalucia in the south of Spain this is a favorite all over Spain. Perfect to have as a snack during the day or whenever you feel like a healthy drink.

This exotic mix of tomatoes, sweet peppers and garlic is made even better with sherry vinegar and olive oil.

Gazpacho Soup Recipe

Ingredients for 4 servings

  • 1.6kg/3lbs ripe tomatoes
  • ½ red pepper
  • ½ green pepper – ½ cucumber
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 1 small onion
  • 2 slices stale bread (crusts removed)
  • 4 tbsp sherry vinegar
  • 4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 300ml/1/2 pint of iced water

Tip! If you want it spicy add some chili pepper.

Method

1. Soak bread in water until it has absorbed all the water (break into pieces first).
2. Skin ripe tomatoes and remove seeds etc from peppers.
3. Peel cucumber, onion and garlic and chop onion, garlic, tomatoes, peppers and cucumber.
5. Now you will need to place it in an electric blender or put it into a jug and use a hand blender.
6. You then squeeze the water from the bread and add to the blender.
7. Add oil and vinegar and blend well.
8. Season the soup and then pour into a large bowl. Cover with plastic film and chill overnight or for a couple of hours.
9. Before serving add ice-cold water until a thick soup-like consistency and if you like add ice-cubes.

gazpachoServe  in bowls with a small amount of finely chopped cucumber or green peppers or anything else you like.

We really hope you enjoy this Gazpacho soup recipe as much as we do. Just in case you don’t have time to make it, you can find this soup in supermarkets all over Spain.

You can also stock up with traditional Spanish food online at LaTienda.com.

¡Buen Provecho!

Valldemossa

 Valldemossa Majorca

valldemossa cafeTo reach the lovely village of Valldemossa you must travel the steep mountain road from Palma.

The road is 15km north of Palma on the stunning north west coast of Majorca.

If you make this journey you will be rewarded with the most magnificent coastal and mountain views of the lovely island of Majorca.

Should you find the journey too daunting you can also take the inland route on the famous Soller train. The town also has a lovely little Port just 6km away on the road to Banyalbura.

Your arrival at the village is confirmed when you see the stunning church steeple.

Valldemossa

Sparkling in the sunshine and set amidst flowers, lemons, carob and cypress trees.

This is the site that must have met the lovers, Frederic Chopin and George Sand when they arrived at the village in November 1838.

Their love affair began in Paris and a few months later they were climbing the coastal road to this famous mountain paradise.

valldomossastreetmajorcaChopin and French Baroness Dudevant (George Sand), stayed in the village with her children until February 1839.

To the dismay of the local people the monastery was their home for this short period of time.

Dressed in her usual attire of trousers and smoking a cigar this was also seen as strange for the small community.  During the early 20th century the nearby village of Deia welcomed many beatniks and writers and this mode of dress was quite acceptable.  For Sand her style of dress was crucial to her way of life in the male dominated Paris of her time.

If she hadn’t used the pseudonym George Sand, she would probably never have succeeded as a famous French novelist. The bitterley cold winter resulted in Chopin leaving due to ill health.

frederic chopinA few years later Sand wrote the now famous ‘A Winter in Mallorca’ and now every July and August, Valdemossa holds a Chopin festival in honor of the great man himself.

In Palma there’s a square named after Chopin and his statue takes pride of place in the square.

Costa Nord Centre – Valldemossa

Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones have a house near the town and in 2000, Douglas opened the Centro Cultural Costa Nord (Costa Nord Centre), a multimedia cultural centre devoted to this area of Majorca Island.

The visit begins with a short film by Douglas in which he describes his passion and love for the island. (Open daily from 9am – 5pm Tel: 971 612425).

Opposite the centre is the excellent Costa Nord restaurant (Avinguda Palma) which is owned by Michael Douglas.

The Village of Santa Catalina Tomás

The patron saint of Majorca, Santa Catalina Tomás was born in Valldemossa and every year , in the middle of July,  the town pays homage to Santa Catalina. The fiesta includes processions with floats and lots of food, wine, dancing and music.

Puerto Soller in Majorca

Soller TramThe town of Soller can be reached via the Orange Tram which is one of the most amazing trips on the island.

Tickets are bought on the tram which then travels through orange and lemon groves back to the town.  If the tram went a little slower,  it would be easy to pick the fruit which dangles in front of you.

The tram travels  through the Placa Sa Constitutio, close to the busy cafes which line the square and the church of Sant Bartomeu.  Boasting a baroque interior and modernist exterior, the church was designed by a pupil of the famous Antoni Gaudi.

Not far away is the lovely modernist  Soller Railway station where you take the Soller train back to Palma . This is a journey not to be missed, the views are stunning and something you’ll never forget.   Definitely worth taking,  especially if you don’t like heights as the coastal roads can be a little frightening if you’re not used to them.

The town owes it’s wealth to an abundance of orange and lemon trees which grow in this fertile valley.  You can enjoy a freshly  squeezed orange juice (zumo de naranja) or lemon juice at any one of the lovely cafes.   The town also claims to be the birthplace of Columbus.

Deia

Deia Majorca

Deia, North West Majorca

Deia is like a hidden jewel nestled under the Serra de Tramuntana (Tramuntana mountains) on the north east coast of Majorca.  During the 20th century philosophers, artists and writers made this remote paradise in the mountains their home and left a lasting legacy which continues to this day.

Overlooking the village and valley is the lovely church of Sant Joan Baptista. This is the resting place of the famous novelist and poet Robert Graves who lived here from 1929 until his death in 1985.

The steep village high street is edged with exclusive boutiques, restaurants, cafes and lovely hotels where many of the rich and famous have stayed. Many actors and writers have lived and still live in the area. Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones are just a few of those who enjoy this beautiful paradise on the north coast of Majorca.

Deia, Majorca

In the late 19th century Jules Verne, Gertrude Stein and Sara Bernhardt were amongst those who stayed in the village. Archduke Ludwig Salvatore of Ausria loved it so much he made it his home.

Since the 1920s the village has been a refuge to many freethinkers and bohemian artists. It’s truly a magical place to be and once you’ve been here you’ll never forget it and return many times.

The lucky ones are those who arrived in the 1950s when property was quite cheap and who live here today.

Deia Restaurant

The village still retains the bohemian atmosphere and there are pretty cafés and restaurants where you can enjoy a drink or Catalan dish.

If you’re here in July or August you can enjoy the famous music festival which Tomas Graves writes about in his book Tuning Up at Dawn.

Top stars such as Jimi Hendrix, Mike Oldfield and many others have attended and played at the festival which is held in this mystical and lovely village.
