TRAVELER’S TALES SPAIN

Traveler's Tales SpainI loved reading Travelers’ Tales Spain: True Stories (Travelers’ Tales Guides) edited by Lucy MacCauley. The book contains true stories of authors such as Gabriel García Marquez and Penelope Casas on their travels through Spain.

As well as being a very enjoyable read, this book must definitely be included in my list of ‘books on Valencia Spain’.

For those visiting Valencia during the last Wednesday in August be sure to read the vivid account by Louis de Bernières of La Tomatina (battle of tomatoes), which is aptly named ‘Seeing Red’.

DUENDE

Duende As a passionate lover of Spain, and after living in Madrid for some years, it’s hardly surprising that after reading Duende: A Journey Into the Heart of Flamenco, I should head straight for Valencia. The book begins just outside Elche which is near Alicante in the region of Valencia.

It’s an account of a young man’s search for ‘duende’ (meaning spirit/soul). His search spreads to Andalucia and Madrid and his subsequent encounters and experiences offer a vivid insight into the Flamenco underworld.

Nightlife In Valencia

Plaza del Ayuntamiento at night

There are so many things to do at night in Valencia, the only problem you’ll have …  is finding the time to enjoy them all.

Whatever kind of entertainment you’re looking for you’ll find it here.

There are clubs, discos, bars, theaters and cinemas and during the summer months many festivals, open air cinema and concerts with top entertainers in the Viveros Gardens.

Things To Do At Night In Valencia

Week-ends are the most lively time of the week for clubs but many of them also open during the week.  The original disco clubs of Valencia were wild. The Barracas club opened in 1965 in the town of Palmeres and the 70s and 80s were the most successful years of the ‘Ruta del Bacalao’.  They still exist today… so, if you enjoy house or techno, take a taxi or bus (at the weekend) from Canovas or the Centro Commercial El Saler – (near the City of Arts & Sciences) to C/ Les Palmeres (Sueca).   Check it out online at BarracaMusic

Clubs, Restaurants, Films & Theater

You can go clubbing, visit a bar or wine and dine in one of the many restaurants in Valencia.  Valencia is full of cultural events and there’s always something good to see at the theater or cinema.

Things To Do At Night In Valencia During Summer

During the summer months La Filmoteca de Verano (a summer open-air event in the Jardines del Turia) shows a selection of films.  The city comes alive with people enjoying  moonlit nights on terraces and open-air bars in Barrio del Carmen in the north-east of Valencia town center.

Where To go ?

  • Canovas Square is an upmarket area of Valencia on the other side of the Turia Gardens with Avenida Blasco Ibáñez and Aragón not far away in the University area of Valencia.
  • Joan Llorenç is about a fifteen minute walk from Barrio del Carmen, it’s a smaller version of Covent Garden in London.
  • The street  named Carrer de Joan Llorenç consists of two rows of disco-bars full of life until 4am.
  • The late night Havana Valencia is on the same street and open until 7am.

Don’t forget that during the hot summer months people vacate the hot clubs of the city for the cooler beach clubs of Valencia.

Things To Do At Night In Valencia in Barrio del Carmen

Take a stroll down Calle Cabelleros in Barrio del Carmen in the Old Quarter.  This is one of the most lively area of the city and on Friday and Saturday evening the clubs, bars and restaurants are overflowing with people.

The area is very bohemian with terraces and bars which attract a variety of people ranging from politicians and artists to students and tourists.

Everyone enjoys the local wine and mouth-watering food which this region of Spain is famous for. An excellent place to start your night is with a few drinks at the popular la Bolsería.

Just go past Mercado Central (Central Market) and La Lonja until the end of the street, turn left into Calle Bolsería and the bar is at No 41. (This street runs into a lovely little square called Plaza Tossal).
