Pharmacy in Spain Information

A pharmacy in Spain is called  a farmacia.

Opening Times:

• They are usually from 9.30am in the morning until 2.00pm in the afternoon.
• Then from 5.00pm until 9.30pm Monday to Friday from 9.00am – 2.00pm on Saturday.

A 24 hour pharmacy is always open and the rota is normally displayed in the pharmacy windows.

You can also find this information from local newspapers in Valencia such as Levante and the free local paper Qué.

Pharmacy in Spain ~ Prescriptions and Charges

Many drugs requiring a prescription in the UK are available over the counter in Spain and are often much cheaper than in the UK.

If you go to the doctor in Spain you must present your EHIC and ask for state-funded healthcare.

• You will pay 50% of the cost or approximately 10% with proof if you are a UK pensioner.
• If you don’t have an EHIC card you are liable to pay all the costs.
• UK pensioners can often reclaim the cost from the UK’s Department for Work and Pensions.
• Those with private medical insurance may qualify for refund depending on the insurance.

Many are able to offer advice in English and all are registered with the local pharmaceutical association which is part of the Consejo General de Colegios Oficiales de Farmaceuticos.

About Health Care In Spain …

Even when living in the most idyllic climate, we must never forget that we can still become ill even in Spain.

It’s not much fun getting sick when on holiday and illness and accidents do happen when we least expect them so be prepared.

Spain is an EU Country and has a reciprocal health agreement with other member states.

The old E111 form entitled EU citizens to free or greatly reduced health care.

From 1 January 2006 the E111 form was replaced with the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) – Tarjeta Sanitaria Europea (TSE) in Spain.

This can be applied for online and your card will be delivered to you in seven days.

If you prefer telephone 0845 606 2030 and your card will be delivered in 10 days.

Or, complete a form in the post office and your card will be delivered in 21 days.

What Does A European Health Insurance Card Cover

A European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) entitles you to reduced-cost (sometimes free) medical treatment (in a hospital).

This applies only if you are staying in a European Economic Area (EEA) country or Switzerland.

If you go to the doctor you must present your EHIC and ask for state-funded healthcare.

If you go to hospital you must present your EHIC on admission or you will be charged as a private patient at private hospital rates.

A GP referral is needed for non-emergencies.

For private health care you pay your own doctor and hospital bills so it’s worth taking out a travel insurance policy which covers you for this.

The EHIC does not cover you for things like being flown home if you become ill or have an accident.

It also doesn’t cover you for cancellations, loss of baggage, loss of money and being mugged, so be prepared.

Medical Treatment In Spain

If you should need medical treament in Spain you’ll find Spanish hospitals very modern, well-equipped and the doctors are excellent.

For health care in Spain this helps with your social and working life and is also very important when making appointments and talking to nurses and doctors.

Many doctors and nurses working in the popular cities and in the south of Spain do speak English but many of them don’t.

So if you intend to live in Spain, it’s a good idea to learn Spanish.

How many times have you bought travel insurance and never needed it and thought that was a waste of money.

Many people feel it’s a bit of a rip-off, so if you want to be safe and not get ripped-off, just shop around and find the best deal. Better safe than sorry!

Tip! Don’t forget to read the small print of the policy before you buy it.

If you are going to do things like scuba diving, make sure you’re covered. If you do have an accident the policy must cover you for this and also repatriation.

How to Choose Travel Insurance

Before you do anything decide if you want a single trip or multi trip insurance policy.

If you’re traveling a lot for business and leisure good policies cover you for travel abroad or in your own country.

Even though the multi trip cover may appear expensive, it works out much cheaper and there’s flexicover for the over 65’s.

However, many policies do have a maximum age but there are many who cater for the over 65s.

As well as covering your medical expenses make sure it will also cover you for things like being flown home if you’re ill, baggage, cancellations and things like being mugged and loss of money.

If there’s a cancellation or you lose your baggage make sure you’re covered. Many online hotel reservation companies and hotels make it a condition that you have a policy before booking with them.

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) only covers you for basic health care, so it’s advisable to be covered for everything.

Opening Hours:

The Bioparc is open 365 days a year and opening hours will vary. The closing hours change during the year depending on the day length.

Some animals may not be visible to the public at the end of the day because of weather or lighting conditions. The box office will remain open from 9.30 am until one hour before Bioparc closes.

MARATÓN DIVINA PASTORA VALENCIA

The 33rd edition of the city’s largest race. Thousands of athletes have already registered and will be running across the city to complete the 42-kilometre race.

The circuit begins at the City of Arts and Sciences (where more sporting activities will be taking place) and then onto Valencia’s beaches and the Royal Marina Juan Carlos I. Then along the coast and across the Turia Gardens to the old town.

From here the runners will pass in front of Bioparc and then return to the City of Arts and Sciences.

National Day of the Region of Valencia & San Dionisio Day

There are two celebrations on the 9 October – National Day of the Region of Valencia and San Dionisio Day (Lovers Day in Valencia).

The event begins on 8 October with a concert at the Palau de la Música and fireworks on the Paseo de la Alameda.

On the big day 9 October are several events which begin with the civic procession honoring the Senyera and mascletà in Plaza del Ayuntamiento.

The day ends with dancing in Plaza de la Virgin and more fireworks.

San Dionisio Day is the eqivalent to Valentine’s Day and to celebrate this very romantic day, Valencianos give colored marzipan ‘mocadorades’ to those they love.

Today is a public holiday and most shops are closed.

Robert Graves ~ Novelist and Poet

Robert Graves lived on Majorca Island from 1929 until his death at the age of 90.

A simple gravestone marks the resting place of the world famous poet and novelist who was born in Wimbledon and endured a lasting love for Deià and Majorca.

He is buried in the cemetery of the village church overlooking the village that he loved.

Graves arrived in Majorca in 1929 and lived in Palma.

Shortly after he bought Ca n’Alluny (remote house) on the edge of the beautiful village of Deia.

He set up home and with a printing press brought from England began to publish his works.

This is how he financed his lifestyle whilst living in Deià.

During the 1950s his literary career took off and his idyllic lifestyle led to many wanting the same kind of life.

Movie stars and artists descended on this remote village in the mountains and set up a community of freethinkers.

Guests at Ca n’Alluny included many friends such as :

Anais Nin,  Ava Gardner,  Alec Guiness, Kingsley Amis,  Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Peter Ustinov.

Graves historical novels include:  The Golden Fleece, King Jesus and Count Belisarius.

He wrote I, Claudius whilst living in Deia and was also a translator of Classical Latin and Ancient Greek.

Two of Graves eight children still live in Majorca and his son Tomás wrote about his childhood and adventures whilst growing up in Deia.

His book Tuning Up at Dawn: A Memoir of Music and Majorca gives a vivid account of Majorcan culture and his amazing life whilst growing up in Deià.
